Box Meetings by Barthélemy Bompard,
Jean-Pierre Tutard and the Kumulus Theatre Company

This book gives an insight into the artistic process and the human adventure that was propelled by the Kumulus street theatre company during its experiences creating the work Box Meetings. It invites the reader to enter into a space where theatre, photography, life as a theatre company and writing all come together.

The shoebox and its contents, which at first sight may appear initially ridiculous, were both in fact for Kumulus the instruments with which to perform theatrical research and create human encounters. They were the tools with which to play with acting and the imagination as a form of vehicle to explore the theme of exodus. In order to carry out this project, the company went travelling for several months to meet other actors, other faces and other realities in the Balkans, in eastern Turkey, in West Africa, in Europe and in France. The cornerstone for the creative process, Box Meetings ended up becoming the path that turned into the show in itself.

Going back over several years of experience as source material, the authors hinged their work on the chronology of the process and the interviews that were made of the people who took part in Box Meetings in all the many countries they travelled through. The work intertwines the photographic narrative by Jean-Pierre Tutard with the choral text of the actors in the company, as well as the lighting by Joël Cramesnil. It sheds light on the creative approach taken by Barthélemy Bompard, the artistic director of Kumulus since it was founded in 1986, and pits his vision against the challenges faced in theatre today.

Both the form and content of this book are designed to be enjoyed by all readers : those who know Kumulus and Box Meetings already, those who don’t, those who are simply curious, professionals or dedicated fans of street theatre, and citizens who are open to the idea of making international encounters.
